She challenged all norms of the society that refused to believe that women would actually make something of value. Before Knight came up with the flat-bottom paper bag making machine, envelope style bags were the trend. After Knight, another evolution happened. In 1883, an inventor named Charles Stilwell got a patent on a machine that could make square bottom paper bags. But the real difference was that now the bags had pleated sides and this made it easy for people to fold them now and store for future usage. This bag became prominently known as the self-opening sack.
Modern Developments in the Making of Paper Bags
As the world entered the 20th century, paper bags saw more evolutions.
Walter Deubener, a grocer from St. Paul, Minnesota, applied some simple basics to bags by using cords in 1912. This helped people carry around 75 pounds at a time without worrying about screwing the packet bottoms. The bags were such a success that Deubener ended up selling more than a million bags every year by 1915!
Paper bags now began coming with handles making it incredibly easy for people to carry them around. They even got adopted as the standard among departmental stores. To add to the marketing prospects, the paper bags now came with beautiful logos and designs.
